Finding the right candidate for your vacancy is crucial when it comes to recruiting into your business. In the current candidate-led climate you want to ensure that the person you hire is not only a perfect fit, but you also want them to retain them. Hiring the wrong candidate can lead to an increase in recruitment spend and resources – which is something we all want to avoid!

The news is full of individuals, teams and businesses that do inspirational things every day but how can these acts relate to your candidate search? Let’s take a look at some of the inspirational individuals of the past month and look closer at what traits they possess – it may give you an idea of what to look for in your next hire.

Rose Ayling-Ellis

The Eastenders star has made history as the first deaf contestant to participate in Strictly Come Dancing. Working hard with her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, Rose has not only continued to score highly in the TV show but is raising awareness by incorporating BSL (British Sign Language) within her routines. Rose’s soaring popularity has been an inspiration to the deaf community and in particular teenagers who are witnessing barriers being broken down and challenges overcome.

Trait to look out for: Rose Ayling-Ellis refused to shy away from the challenge that lay in front of her and her participation in the show has brought about some positive changes with the production team learning sign language and dancers and contestants using captions within social media videos. Rose has shown a determination and has led the way for others to overcome any barriers placed in front of them!

William Shatner

October saw William Shatner boldly go where no nonagenarian has gone before – space! William Shatner swapped the captains seat on the Enterprise for a seat on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin sub-orbital capsule. The ten-minute journey saw the Star Trek actor fly to the edge of space and back in what Shatner called “the most profound experience”. The 90-year-old became the oldest person in space after beating the previous record that was set in July 2021 by 82-year-old Wally Funk.

Trait to look out for: William Shatner saw science fiction become reality and showed that age is just a number when it comes to space travel. In the space of ten-minutes Shatner experienced both zero gravity and the effects of over 4G of force on his body upon re-entry – an experience very few encounter especially within that time period! Many 90-year-olds would shy away from a trip to space, but Shatner took the challenge with both hands and briefly flew among the stars.

Depher and Hugh Grant

Set up in 2017 after hearing that many elderly customers had been scammed by rogue traders, Burnley based non-profit Depher has been raising funds to provide plumbing and heating services for the elderly, disabled and families within the community. Like many other charities they were hit hard during the Covid-19 pandemic and were on the verge of closing as funds were running low Depher’s founder, James Anderson, decided to open their fundraiser for winter 2021 and saw a very generous and sizable donation from British actor, Hugh Grant.

James Anderson went on to reveal that Hugh Grant’s donation could provide ten boilers for families in need this as well as bringing awareness to the charity as the press begin to report on the donation, allowing more donations to role in.

Trait to look out for: Hugh Grant’s generosity and selfless act has helped those in need have access to services that they would not have been able to afford without Depher’s existence.

Through setting up Depher, James Anderson and his team have helped more than 19,000 families not only with repairs but also support during the pandemic with PPE, food, and bills. His devotion to helping anyone in need is truly inspirational.
